|Day 1 Meet guide on arrival at Tripoli airport and transfer to
city centre hotel for two nights.
Day 2 Full day sightseeing tour of Tripoli including the National Museum, Arch of Marcus Aurelius, House of Karamanli and the souks.
Day 3 Visit the centuries-old grain store of Qasr al-Haj
(chosen by Dan Cruickshank as one of the "World's 80 Greatest
Treasures" in a BBC documentary) and the hilltop store/citadel at Nalut. Continue to Ghadames
for two nights.
Sightseeing in the World Heritage Site of Ghadames
on the edge of the Sahara desert. Visit the old town with its labyrinthine
passages and take lunch in a traditional house. Late afternoon excursion
to see the sun set over the sand dunes.
Day 5 Day's
drive to Sabha, capital of the Fezzan region.
|Day 11 Visit the remains of the Garamantian
warrior civilisation at Germa, following which we
enter the vast Ubari
Sand Sea for a thrilling drive over immense sand dunes towards the
famous Dawada oases where a refreshing swim may be taken at Lake Gabraoun.
Camp overnight among the dunes.
Day 12 Continue visit to the Ubari Sand Sea before driving to Sabha for flight to Tripoli.
Day 13 Visit the Janzour catacomb museum with its tomb paintings. Continue to Sabrata with its stunning 2nd century Colonnaded Theatre, Mausoleum of Bes, Temples of Antoninus and Zeus, Court of Justice, great Roman Forum and Museum with its exquisite mosaics. Return to Tripoli.
Day 14 Full day excursion to the magnificent Roman city
of Leptis Magna where the sites include the
triumphal Arch of Septimus Severus, the Hadrianic Baths, the huge Forum,
the Basilica, the Theatre and the vast Amphitheatre. Return to
